Factors Affecting Suicide ideation in the Young-old and Old-old Elderly

|
The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of predicting factors of suicide ideation among the elderly and to analyze the pathway structure between the factors influencing suicidal ideation. Secondary data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs (KIH) were used for the elderly in 2017, and the total number of elderly people aged 65 and older was 10,299. Of these, 5,892 (57.2%) were elderly people aged 65-74, and 4,407 (42.8%) were elderly people aged 75 or older. The analysis used SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 22.0.The main results are as follows. First, there was no statistically significant difference in the suicidal ideation between the young-old elderly and the old-old elderly. On the other hand, there were statistically significant differences in the predictive variables affecting suicidal ideation among the young-old and the old-old elderly. Subjective health and economic levels were found to be worse in old-old elderly people than young-old elderly people. Life satisfaction was higher in young-old elderly than old-old elderly. And the depression was higher in the old-old elderly than in the young-old elderly, and the effect size was significantly higher. Second, there was a statistically significant difference between the young-old elderly and the old-old elderly in the path of subjective health, the path of economic satisfaction to life satisfaction, the path of subjective health to depression and the path of depression to suicide ideation. Based on these results, social welfare policies and practical suggestions for suicide prevention of the elderly were suggested.
